I should have reported it but was so awe stuck by its size I totally forgot.. Many confuse the Pilaete Woodpecker for the Ivory Bill But they are very different in looks & size..

I never heard of it before, and i’m glad you have some video footage of the event!
So I could see it live in action.

Cheers

Black body with white on wings. Sounded like he was hammering my tree. Had to be the size of a huge crow (or larger). At first I thought he was a turkey vulture because of his size. Beautiful creature. Got a video of him.

He was huge and majestic! I don’t remember the long beak as much as the beautiful sharp zebra like markings on his back and beautiful red top notch! I was fortunate enough to see three types of woodpeckers this spring. I have a very large old tree next to my house with some dead branches. Sometimes that is where I can spot them. I believe it was the suet that brought them all this year although there has been one type of woodpecker here every spring for the ten years we have lived here. They come back in the fall. I had a terrible time trying to identify this bird. It isn’t extinct! Alive and well in West Central Iowa! This year i also got to see my first red headed woodpeckers several times. There was a definite size difference. I hope I get the chance to see the Imperial again and have my camera closer!

I emailed A professor at Auburn and he replied that it was a Pileated Woodpecker. It was not – I have seen plenty of Pileated in the woods of Tennessee. After I got home I did some extensive reading and eventually came to the conclusion that what I saw was an ivory billed woodpecker. I’m not even sure if they lived in this area, but I did see a female ivory billed. She was just landing in a field about 50 yards from a grove of trees on the banks of the Conecuh.

An Ivory Bill woodpecker. Size of a crow, red head crest, black body with a white stripe or streak across wings. Had a good view. Not the first time. Thought y’all might be interested.
